“Harrisonburg Children’s Museum, also called the Explore More Discovery Museum, is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to provide a hands-on, interactive museum where children (ages 2-12) and their families can explore and learn together.”1 When the museum moved into its new, larger facility, they approached Lantz Custom Woodworking for their reception desk.

This project was unique because it allowed LCW creative design input, including selection of materials, inlay layout, and lighting features. This resulted in a very successful final product.  The reception desk is laid out in a large circle, with a blueberry-colored laminate counter and three species of wood inlayed on the vertical walls. The inlays depict a series of large, elegant leaf shapes encircling the unit. The motif ties in with the two-story-tall artificial tree that rises up directly behind the desk. The overall effect is a visually arresting addition to Harrisonburg’s revitalized downtown area.
